United Methodist Women (UMW)

The purpose of UMW is:  “The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God, to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.” UMW of Seymour meets the first Thursday of the month March through November at 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.  During the summer months, the group plans two outings and in December there is a Christmas party.  The organization caters the Retired Teachers’ Luncheon, holds a bake sale during Oktoberfest, and hosts a Christmas Bazaar the last Saturday of October to raise funds.  These funds are used for mission projects locally and within the Conference of the Methodist Church. Meetings usually consist of a devotion, a program on some form of missions, a business meeting, and wonderful refreshments.  The organization is opened to all women of the church and by attending you become a member!!!

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest, the first weekend of October (Thursday through Saturday), is a fun and exciting time for the City of Seymour when the residents can reflect upon and honor their German heritage through the exhibitions of craft booths, music, food, and the annual parade.  First United Methodist Church of Seymour participates in Oktoberfest by hosting a Flea Market in the north parking lot.   The United Methodist Women (UMW) hold a bake sale during the Oktoberfest with the baked goods being supplied by members of the church.  The hottest item for this sale is the Persimmon Pudding (you better get there early in order to buy any).  Volunteers are needed to man the bake sale, and to provide security for the booth renters at the Flea Market.  Anyone interested in volunteering may call the church office or email the church at fumcseymour@gmail.com.   Funds raised from the bake sale and the rentals of the booth space for the Flea Market are used for mission opportunities locally and within the Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Christmas Bazaar

FUMC’s annual Christmas Bazaar is held the last Saturday of October from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall and is sponsored by the United Methodist Women (UMW).  There is no admission fee and an abundance of parking. Vendor wares range across the board from:  doll clothes ~ jewelry ~ Avon Products ~ Tupperware ~ crocheted and knitted items ~ purses ~ woodwork ~ toys ~ seasonal decorations ~ baked goods, and so much more.  UMW sponsors a silent auction (with items donated by local merchants) which is a fun way to buy those special gifts, and lunch is available for a small fee.  The ladies bring in their baked goods so that you don’t go hungry while checking out the vendors. Proceeds from the bazaar support the UMW mission projects.

Interested vendors may contact the church at 812-522-1137 or

fumcseymour@gmail.com.
